what’s on hand

Three assemblages made for Oregon City’ Art Commission’s 6×6 show, June 2025. Each piece is 6×6 inches, built entirely from what I already had – found wood, stone, string, wool felt, char.

One holds an oak gall on a string above a hand-painted target. Pull it back and let it fall. The satisfying plonk sound it makes striking the box is part of the piece. Another sets a stone against orange wool felt worked in French knots, the rock’s own natural pits echoing the stitches. The rock is partially painted, the box split between orange and gray. The third holds a charred branch above a row of blackened sticks, as if pulled from a wildland fire.

This body of work grew directly out of my temporary collage practice, which is where I’m still working now. I’ve committed to using up what I already have before buying anything new – materials collected mostly from my own property and inventory. The limit hasn’t gotten in the way. If anything, it has sharpened my creativity.

One of the three has sold.
