Why is this site organized this way?
Because I don’t think a body of work is best understood as a grid to scroll past. My installations were built to be walked into, not looked at from a distance; Untangled, Act of Stillness, and Spiral all asked something of the person standing inside them. Much of my other work runs small and intimate by comparison, close enough that looking at it feels like looking through a window into another world rather than standing back to take in a piece on a wall. I wanted this site to ask something similar of a visitor, to be moved through by feeling or theme rather than sorted by chronology or medium. That’s why it’s organized into portals instead of one long archive. If you’d rather explore by medium, theme, or status directly, the browse page lets you filter that way.
What do Unwinding, Tension, and Binding mean?
Unwinding holds raw material and unfinished thought, work still in process, not yet resolved. Tension holds dissonance that hasn’t been solved, work built around what pulls against itself. Binding holds collective repair, work made for gathering people together. Illustration & Design sits apart from the three. It’s the more traditional side of what I do: illustration and graphic design made for clients.
Why is illustration and commercial design work included alongside fine art?
Because they’re part of the same practice. My studio work moves between fine art, illustration, and design. Artists are not one-dimensional, and trying to squeeze myself into a single category never worked. I don’t think it’s the only honest way to present a body of work. What’s consistent isn’t the medium, it’s the questions I bring to my practice and how I keep working through them.
Why so many different mediums?
What’s stayed consistent across four decades isn’t the medium, it’s the questions: what holds, what separates, what passes between us. Painting, encaustic, installation, illustration, photography, pattern design, they’re different tools for asking the same questions in different rooms. Staying loyal to one medium never worked for me the way staying loyal to those questions has.
Why is there less new work starting around 2020?
My time went elsewhere for a while, not away from the work but into it in different forms. From 2019 to 2021 I worked for a design build firm engineering tensile structures. I started on the floor welding triangle sections for the US Pavilion shade structure in Spokane and worked my way up into an executive role, along with conceptual illustration and modeling. I also took on civic roles that studio work doesn’t usually come with, vice chair of the Oregon City Arts Commission and the Travel Oregon City marketing board, and trained as a therapeutic arts facilitator. All of that is still art-making, even when it isn’t producing something for the wall. I’m returning to more studio output now, and some of what’s on this site reflects that shift.
Do you take commissions, or is work available for purchase?
Yes to both. I take commissions and have original work available for purchase, inquire directly. Some pieces are also listed on Saatchi Art, linked in the footer.
Can I license or reprint your work?
Yes. I’ve licensed illustration and fine art work a number of times and I’m open to inquiries about licensing or reprinting existing pieces.
